Walk for Justice praises Christ who redeemed the world

SAN ANTONIO • A Lenten Walk for Justice, sponsored by the San Antonio College (SAC) Catholic Student Center, drew more than 60 people downtown the evening of Feb. 25.
The contemporary Way of the Cross began in Milam Park and ended at San Fernando Cathedral, with stops at locations including Market Square, the O’Henry House and City Hall.
Individual stations focus on issues that affect human life and dignity today.
The first station, Jesus is condemned to death, was led by Larry Boudreau and Maryknoll missioners and focused on economic injustices.
The second station, Jesus takes up his cross, was led by Andy Hill and the Marianist Leadership Program and focused on unemployment and underemployment.
The third station, Jesus falls for the first time, was led by Mary Wisniewski of the archdiocesan Mission Awareness Office and focused on refugee and immigration issues. |
The fourth station, Jesus meets his mother, was led by Linda Johnson and students from Northwest Vista College and focused on child abuse.
The fifth station, Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry his cross, was led by Rey Gustamente and students from St. Mary’s University Campus Ministry and focused on racism.
The sixth station, Veronica wipes the face of Jesus, was led by Margie Leick, a nurse at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa, and focused on inequality in health care access.
The seventh station, Jesus falls for the second time, was led by SAC Catholic Campus Ministry and focused on war.
The eighth station, Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem, was led by students of University of the Incarnate Word and instructor Sister Martha Ann Kirk, CCVI, and focused on domestic violence.
The ninth station, Jesus falls for the third time, was led by Imelda Morales and students from the Palo Alto College Catholic Student Center and focused on substance abuse.
The 10th station, Jesus is stripped of his garments, was led by Sister Imelda Phelan, CSB, and students from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) 1604 campus Catholic Student Center and focused on violence in the media.
The 11th station, Jesus is nailed to the cross, was led by Linda Johnson and the students of the Intercollegiate Providence Retreat Outreach Program and focused on destruction of the environment.
The 12th station, Jesus dies on the cross, was led by Imelda Morales and the UTSA downtown campus students and focused on isolation of the ill and dying.
The 13th station, Jesus is taken down from the cross, was led by Isaac Brown and SAC students and focused on discrimination based on sexual orientation.
The 14th station, Jesus is placed in the tomb, was led by Rick Doucette from the archdiocesan Office of Social Concerns and focused on pro-life and death penalty issues.
Lastly, the 15th station, Jesus is raised from the dead, was led by Brother Robert DeLong from the Missionaries of the Holy Family and focused on children of poverty.
At the conclusion of the event, participants were asked by organizers to reflect on three things they could do to make a positive difference in the world. |
