"Mom" Stuebben dies March 26

    Clara Henzen Stuebben, better known as “Mom Stuebben” to priests and religious around the archdiocese, passed away peacefully with her family on March 26 at Northeast Methodist Hospital after suffering a stroke two days prior.
    The mother of Msgr. Lawrence J. Stuebben, vicar general of the archdiocese, and Msgr. George H. Stuebben, a retired Army chaplain, she was born on Feb. 26, 1907, to Adela Weltens Henzen and Lorenz Henzen on a farm in Guadalupe County.
    Her mother came to Texas from Belgium as an infant and her father descended from German immigrants.She married George H. Stuebben in 1928. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1962 and her sister, Theresa Zunker.
    She is survived by her three sons, the two monsignors and Thomas L. Stuebben and wife Mary Jane Gosnell Stuebben; six grandchildren, Michael Stuebben and wife Juris, David Stuebben and wife Eileen, Beth Stuebben McGinnis and husband Mark, Carol Stuebben Spears and husband Stephen, Linda Stuebben Flieller and husband John, Paul Stuebben; 11 great-grandchildren, Melissa Stuebben, Amanda Stuebben, Thomas Stuebben, Caitlyn Ploch, Coalton McGinnis, Sterling McGinnis, Skylar McGinnis, Ross Spears, Lauren Flieller, Emily Flieller and Spencer Flieller; one surviving brother, Joseph L. Henzen and wife Viola; numerous nieces and nephews.

A parishioner of St. Joseph Church (downtown), she served as president of Altar Society, treasurer of St. Elizabeth Society, president of Parish Council of Catholic Women, was active in St. Joseph Parish School and Central Catholic High School Mother’s Club, Belgium Club, member of St. Mary’s Guild and Catholic Life Insurance.
    She was honored by the Holy Father with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal. She was named “Mother of the Year” by St. Joseph’s Parish.
    Rosaries were recited at 6 and 8 p.m. on March 28, at St. Pius X Church, her adopted parish for the past 20 years, to accommodate the large number of mourners. Mass of Christian Burial was held the morning of March 29 at St. Joseph’s Church.
    Celebrant was Archbishop Patrick Flores, with concelebrants including her two priest sons, retired Auxiliary Bishop Bernard Popp, Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Flanagan, Auxiliary Bishop Patrick Zurek, Dallas Bishop Charles Grahmann, Amarillo Bishop John Yanta and clergy of the archdiocese.
    Music was provided by the San Antonio Liederkranz and ushers were members of the Alhambra Caravan.
Interment followed at the St.Joseph Society Cemetery. In lieuof flowers, memorials may be made
